Are you a Grain of Sand or Mustard Seed??

He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.

-Luke 17:6

I think many of us read this scripture and just take it at face value- if i just have a tiny bit of faith, i can do all God has called me to do. But if that is what Jesus meant i think he would have said “faith like a grain of sand”… the clear difference is that a grain of sand will always stay the size that it is, while a mustard seed will take root and grow into something HUGE. I’m sure if we look around we can see the difference between mustard seed and mustard tree faith. I believe that what Christ was saying was that if we take our little bit of faith and we hand it over to him and allow him to water it and shine sunlight on it, than he will grow it, slowly but surely, into a tree. If we are content with mustard seed faith, than we are holding it back from God and what he wants to make of the seed. I think we can all agree that a tree does much more than a seed- it holds birds nests and homes for squirrels and other critters, it can support a swing or provide shade for people, its roots help prevent erosion, it creates oxygen and, it creates more seeds, like it once was. God wants us all to grow and be stretched until we have a mustard tree of faith, then, instead of treasuring our little seed of faith, we can spread and plant many seeds of faith from our own tree!
